Equipment and Technology

What follows is a small selection of items which are the products of the Bright Coast’s most inventive artificers.

Description: Deadly devices that are occasionally just as dangerous to their crew as they are to the enemy, cannon are massively upscaled versions of the intricate black powder weapons and pistols favoured by some. What they lack in reliability, however, is more than made up for in sheer destructive force – though they are unwieldy for use in any but fixed positions.

Cannon can be broadly divided into two types: siege cannon and ship cannon

Price: 1sp/cup (prepared), 8sp/lb (bulk)
Description: This drink hails from the far northeast of Gaelrith, and is brewed by pouring boiling water through crushed, roasted coffee beans. A very strong form is potent enough to reduce the penalties from the fatigued condition from –2 to –1 for 1 hour.

Price: 10 gp
Weight: 1/2lb
Description: Brought to Gaelrith by Elven traders, this device points north, granting you a +2 circumstance bonus on Survival checks made to avoid becoming lost. You can also use it to grant the same bonus on Knowledge (dungeoneering) checks made to navigate underground.

Goggles, Smoked

Price: 10 gp
Description: These spectacles have lenses made of smoked glass that help protect against creatures with gaze attacks. You are always treated as averting your gaze when dealing with gaze attacks, and you gain a +8 circumstance bonus on saving throws against visual-based attacks (any attack that a blind creature would be immune to). You take a –4 penalty on Perception checks while wearing the goggles, and all opponents are treated as having concealment (20% miss chance).

Printing Press

Price: 250gp
Weight: 150lb
Description: A hand-cranked press uses a plate on which all of the text on a page is carved in reverse. Changing the plate is a simple process, but creating a new one is expensive and labor-intensive. The press prints one page at a time, at a rate of about five pages per minute. A stationer then needs to cut and trim the pages and bind the book.

Surgeon’s Tools

Price: 20gp
Weight: 5lb
Description: When used in conjunction with a healer’s kit, surgeon’s tools raise the kit’s bonus to a +3 circumstance bonus on Heal checks to treat wounds or deadly wounds.

Price: 2,000/6,000/8,000 gp
Weight: 12/24/44 lb
Description: This basic, semi-portable telescope allows the user to see greater detail on very distant objects. Telescopes can be built to a variety of specifications, but those most often used by adventuring stargazers are listed here. A telescope grants the listed circumstance bonus (+2, +4, or +6) on Perception checks (see table above) to discern celestial bodies and on Knowledge (geography) checks to learn about the planets when used at night.

A telescope can be used to look at either terrestrial or celestial objects. Distance penalties on Perception checks for viewing objects through the telescope are divided by the telescope’s magnification. Assembling, disassembling, or significantly moving a telescope takes 1 minute.
